Bear River Wetlands Easement

Great Salt Lake is an internationally recognized ecological resource. Every year, millions of migratory birds spanning more than 300 species use its waters and wetlands for breeding and as a stopover point on their migratory journey.

Great Salt Lake and its surrounding wetlands are also vital to Utah’s economy, contributing billions both directly and indirectly to industry and recreation. Minerals such as salt and lithium are mined from the lake as well as over 14% of the world’s magnesium supply. These minerals are used in everything from cell phones to electric vehicles. Brine shrimp “Artemia” are another critical resource harvested from the lake and support an international aquaculture industry as well as the millions of migratory birds passing through the region.

The lake, surrounding wetlands, and other nearby bodies of water provide significant recreational opportunities including bird watching, waterfowl hunting, fishing, sailing, and kayaking. Additionally the “Lake Effect” provides 5-10% of Utah’s world famous snow each year.

For these reasons, we are proud to have been able to work as a facilitator on this important project. As a nonprofit organization with ties to our community, BRLC is well-situated to bring together various partners to complete conservation projects. On this project, we were able to bring together a private landowner with federal agencies and private foundations to provide the funding necessary to complete this easement and protect over 4,000 acres of wetlands, working lands, open space, and critical migratory bird habitat.

Bear River Land Conservancy is grateful to have been part of this monumental project.
